video camera professional quality
Best cheapest professional video camera?

Does anyone know of a high quality video camera that can be used to film short movies? Cheap yet has well rounded functionality, preferably digital, and very importantly a very good sounding built in microphone that doesn't capture background noise. Theirs always that one product that shines brighter then every other, does anyone know such of a camera that can be worthy of such an honor? Price range should be $100-$500

Assuming a "professional" camcorder has a lens filter diameter larger than 70mm; a 3CCD or 3CMOS imaging chip array of 1/4" or larger (1/3" preferred); separate manual focus and zoom rings; XLR audio audio connectors and manual audio control and a LANC port, you won't find one in that price range.

The least expensive would be the prosumer Canon GL2. Then jump to the Sony HDR-FX7 prosumer. The Sony HDR-FX1000 is a good one... But still not pro-grade. There are several between these and the Canon XLH series with SMTP code and all the real pro stuff.

Your stated budget range is essentially the entry consumer camcorder level. The best you could do would be the Canon FS100 or ZR960. Small lenses and imaging chips common to consumer camcorder in the same price range - but these have a mic jack - heads up theough - no manual audio control. And the miniDV tape ZR960 is much closer to the "pro" level because it uses miniDV tape and records to DV format video.
